About David of the Coast
Why I tell Jamaican stories
I was born and raised in Jamaica, where creativity was everywhere, in the music, the food, the language, and the resilience of the people. That environment shaped my perspective and instilled in me a lasting drive to create.
Growing up, I learned parts of Jamaica’s history in school, but it never fully came alive for me. I knew these stories mattered and that they were part of the foundation of the place I called home, yet it was hard to grasp their true scale and weight from a textbook alone.
After moving to New York, distance gave me a new perspective. Being away from home made me miss Jamaica more deeply, and being surrounded by so many other cultures, stories, and perspectives made me more curious about my own. I began to see Jamaica’s folklore, history, and culture not just as background, but as something rich, powerful, and worth exploring in a more immediate way.
That shift led me to tell Jamaican stories through bite-sized cinematic videos that feel vivid, engaging, and alive.
